Sunday Morning In-Person Worship Service, livestreamed on 4th July

We've continuing to hold regular, in-person worship services on Sunday mornings at 10:30am in the United Church building on New Street.  It's great that regulations now allow us to sing together (although we still keep masks on) and that we can have fellowship in the church garden after the service.

Last Sunday, I taught from the Old Testament book of Daniel, chapter 8, in which we're given more specific details about some of the kingdoms that were dreamt about earlier in the book.  Just like a jigsaw, we can put the pieces together to get an overall picture of what God was making known, and we learn that, within the vision of Daniel, there is also a message to us.

Sunday Morning Worship Service, 6th June 2021

During our worship service on Sunday, we spent time looking at the book of Daniel chapter 5 and found an example of what Jesus once described:

Matthew 13:12: "For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away."

Below is the full service that was livestreamed on YouTube, in which we also have communion in remembrance of the death of Jesus Christ for us.

The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament (1 Peter 1:10-12)

What was the Holy Spirit doing before Jesus was born? And if the Christian faith is all about Christ, why should we bother reading the Old Testament? We consider the answers to these questions and others in this sermon, based on 1 Peter 1:10-12.

A Midweek Message: A Fatal Mystery (Daniel pt. 3)

How can someone remain calm in a crisis?

In Daniel chapter 2, a mystery becomes an emergency when human power and knowledge are ineffective.  However, while others are panicking, Daniel exhibits prudence (being calm and wise), prayer (trusting God to help) and praise (in response to God's mercies).

In this message, we consider how we can respond in the same way if we have the same faith as Daniel.

A Midweek Message: Dinner or Death! (Daniel pt.2)

We're continuing our series called "Choose God's Adventure" in the Book of Daniel.

Can God be in control, even when life is difficult?  The answer from the first chapter of Daniel is "Yes!"  In this message, we see the sovereignty of God in the life of His people, especially Daniel and his 3 friends.

A Midweek Message: Choose God's Adventure (Daniel 1)

This is an introductory message to the book of Daniel, which we'll be teaching from for the next few months on Sunday evenings.  The title of the series is "Choose God's Adventure", and in this first sermon, we explore some of the history and context of the book.

In the twelth chapter of the book of Joshua, we are able to see the unity, victory and security that come through faith in the Lord.

A Midweek Message: Facing Opposition (Joshua 11)

In this message, we consider (among other things) how the sovereignty of God should stimulate faith rather than sedate it.  If we trust God for the ends, then we should also trust him for the means - and often, God uses his people as the means.

A Midweek Message: To be or to pretend to be? (Joshua 9)

In this message, based on the Book of Joshua chapter 9, we recognise that faith must be genuine.  The Gibeonites try to deceive Joshua, but ultimately realise that they must be honest and sincerely trust in the Lord God.

A Midweek Message: Gospel Themes in Joshua

In this sermon from the book of Joshua, chapter eight, we recognise the gospel themes found in the Old Testament, and how entrance into the promised land ultimately points us to something greater.

A Midweek Message: Judgment at Jericho (Joshua 6)

In Joshua chapter 6, God passes judgment on Jericho as the Israelites begin to conquer the promised land.  This points us to a future judgment that only Jesus can save us from.

A Midweek Message: Crossing the River (Joshua 3 and 4)

In this message, we recognise the power of God demonstrated at the crossing of the Jordan and consider how, as God's people, we are to prepare to receive our inheritance.

A Midweek Message: God's Redemptive Ways (Ruth 4)

In this final message based on chapter four of the Book of Ruth, we consider what God is doing for His people through the actions of a redeemer and how that points us to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

A Midweek Message: God's Involving Ways (Ruth 3)

In this message, based on chapter three of the Book of Ruth, we see how God involves imperfect people while bringing about His perfect plans.

A Midweek Message: God's Mysterious Ways (Ruth 1)

In the Book of Ruth, we see the different ways God works to save His people.  In chapter one, we consider the mysterious ways of God.  In the wake of great loss, Ruth puts her trust in God and begins an unexpected journey from sorrow into joy.

Some Words for Wednesday - Jesus and the Law of Moses (Matthew 5)

We're now returning to our series in the gospel of Matthew.  In chapter 5, Jesus speaks about "the Law and the Prophets" before going on to describe the challenge of living now as citizens of God's kingdom.

Some Words for Saturday: Around The Bible in 80 Days - Day 50: Return from Exile

We come to the end of the Old Testament as we reach day 50 of our journey "around the Bible in 80 days".  The people of God return home from exile.  It is a time of restoration and rebuilding, and yet there is a sense of disappointment.  God provides the hope of a more glorious future, and we learn more about the gospel.

Some Words for Friday: Around The Bible in 80 Days - Day 44: The Exile

As we continue our journey "around the Bible in 80 days", we reach the time of the exile, and God's promises appear to be breaking.  Is there hope for God's people?  And what does this period of Biblical history teach us about the gospel?

Some Words for Thursday: Around The Bible in 80 Days - Day 36: David

I'm finally catching up with uploading sermons to the blog!  We reach Day 36 of our journey around the Bible, and the time of David the king.  What does this period of history teach us about the gospel?
